So it turns out that when you win a Canadian Comedy Award, if there's more than one winner in your category, they hand out the first award free and then charge everyone else $170 for their pressboard beaver plaque.
Hi Alex,

Cass forwarded me your e-mail [asking after the award that I won]... I have attached an order form for you to review from Ansell's Awards and Specialities. Please contact them directly if you wish to place an order.

Each trophy is $170.00 plus tax and shipping and handling. This a discounted rate that we were able to secure because we ordered such a large quantity.

Let me know if you have any questions, or if I can be of assistance.

Regards,
Emilie Tenney
The Bayley Group [address redacted]
I wrote back:
Dear Emilie:

Seriously? You're charging the winners almost $200 for their awards???
Emilie wrote back:
Because there are so many writers in some categories and so many people in troops it is the foundation policy to pay for one trophy per category. Unfortunately, at this time, we are unable to provide trophies to all winners due to the cost associated with this as you are aware - it can be very costly.

I apologise.

Regards,
Emilie
So I wrote back (I was worried about the troops after all):
Dear Emilie:

How much for just a photograph of the trophy, suitable for framing?

Also, is there a discount if I do the engraving myself?
Apparently Emilie is too good a person to be vulnerable to sarcasm, 'cause she wrote back
Alex, thanks for being such a good sport!
Ah well. I have a certain resistance to awards that you have to pay money to receive -- you know, Nigerian money scams and all -- so I guess no funny beaver plaque in this house. Maybe I'll print out the order form they sent and frame that.

Although the saintly Karen Walton has graciously offered to throw a kegger to raise money to buy the Canadian Comedy Awards some spare beavers.

PS -- If you want your own Canadian Comedy Award Beaver, I'd be happy to send you the order form. But they're expensive!

PPS -- Gee, I wonder what an Oscar costs?

UPDATE: According to the comments, other Canadian awards are even more expensive than Canadian Comedy Awards!

I actually had a Gemini statue taken in a break-in a few years ago (insert starving writer gag here).

I called the Academy looking for a replacement. They laughed. Not a chance in hell, I was told.

After considerable bitchiness on my part I got a call about a week later telling me that I forked over 500 they'd send me another, but I'd have to get it engraved myself.

Me and two of my colleagues won a "Gémeaux" award a few years back. They gave us only one statue and to get two more, we would have had to pay 350$ each (engraved, I believe). The other two winners declined and were nice enough to leave the original with me.

Looks like a Gémeaux is cheaper than the anglo equivalent (Gemini)! Unless the price has gone up since I asked...

Ditto for me --- two of us won a Gemini years ago and I had too pay for the second one. Fortunately (and quite nicely) the crew chipped in to buy it for me.

Do you have to be an award winner to post on your site. I wasn't aware of that. I apologize if I have committed a faux pas.

And those Nigerian money scams are such crap. Thankfully, the letter I got was from The Ivory Coast, so I knew IT was legitimate. Don't worry, with the money I'm making, I'll buy you your award, Alex.

Unless the policy has changed, Canadian award shows get you both ways.

People think you just get nominated, but actually submitting your show for an Gemini used to cost $500 for each category in which you wanted your cast and crew considered.

I saw a press release from CTV this year where they'd passed on the news categories because "it just isn't worth it."

By Blogger jimhenshaw, at 11:07 PM

Clearly I've spent my whole life misunderstanding the meaning of the word 'award'!

(btw, don't miss the entry deadline for this year's 'Stevies'. All payments to me at the usual offshore address)

By Blogger Stephen Gallagher, at 4:34 AM

They may have saved money on the awards, but they bought themselves a bunch of bad publicity. How short sighted.

By Blogger Ross Pruden, at 11:17 AM

My sister won a Gemini last year as part of a group, and she too was told she'd have to pay if she wanted a statue.

The worst part was, the reception after the awards had a CASH BAR!

What the !!@#$% is wrong with this country?!?

By Blogger Jennifer Smith, at 4:50 PM

So many awards in this blog, and in the Comment section!!

What's a CASH BAR?
