Do they, like, have to sign an oath that they will play only trance music from clubs, and not danceable hits from the past? I've never met a party DJ who took a request (though they all say they will), and they never play music appropriate to the party.

There was one DJ who took a request, many years ago. His body was never found. The Holy Order of DJs never, ever forgives that kind of behaviour.
If I ever need music for a party, and want to be sure it's all stuff we all like, I'm creating lots of custom playlists, then just plugging the iPod into the speaker system. It's the only way of getting what you want. Otherwise it'll be speeded up songs mixed together that nobody's ever heard of, and techno versions of Enrique's Hero (I've heard it, many many times - it's just as bad as you can imagine).
That does it. I'm saving up for an iPod.
Well, I guess now you know what it's like to have your notes ignored.
