Interesting conversation yesterday with Lisa about one of our core characters, Bianca. While she's a character with a potential for drama -- a rich girl with distant parents, who just got out of rehab -- we're having trouble coming up with fresh and original story lines for her.

One way to go at this is try to find some Bianca stories anyway, because she's core cast and we have to serve her. But regardless what's in the bible, at this point we're only writing our second ep. If we can't find good stories for her, maybe she doesn't deserve to be core cast. A bible is only a plan. You don't stick to a plan for the sake of the plan.

What we need to do is give her some problem or opportunity or goal that we can make into a story against which her character traits can play. You can only tell the story of a character's personality once, and it's unfortunate to tell that story because you have to come at it head on, and then you've cooked that character. Show that personality in action in a situation that relates to that personality trait, but only tangentially.

We may also need to discover something new about the character that we didn't know before. Maybe rich and rehab (and I suppose Latina) aren't enough to make a fresh and convincing character.

What secret has Bianca been keeping from us?

Maybe the secret she has is that she is deeper than just be a kid whose parents are rich (I always make that distinction) and she just got out of rehab.

What's the one thing she does with her own time that no one knows about? What's the one thing she's good at? Does she even know she's good at it?

Spy on her a bit and let us know...

Why not make her with a drug problem, instead of just out of rehab.

Also, if she needs attention, some disgusting, secret, older guy who treats her bad, and provides her with her much needed drugs.

She can use her character traits to get her fix, which is tragic, because she is so talented.

What if there is a reason why her parents are distant.

What if the parents want to remain distant.

What if the parents are the ones actually funding and encouraging her drug habit - and get drug dealers to "accidentally" pass by her or contact her.

I think she is adopted - and they've always hated the child they got - and she's always known and felt that this was the case. She doesn't know she's adopted by her rich parents. They always treated her like shit compared to their biological child they had after they adopted Bianca.

Bianca went to rehab secretly, unbeknownst to her parents - but now she's out (for revenge).

But maybe we find out her parents aren't so cruel after all - and have some over-possessive type of problem themselves - they really wanted to keep her close - and wanted to cripple her in some way so that she could always remain dependant on them and never grow up - always be their "baby".
