SECOND OPINION ON SPECCING BOSTON LEGAL
Another source tells me that Boston Legal's in trouble, and never spec a show that's in trouble.
Call me sentimental, but I'm inclined to think that Boston Legal, if it survives Season One, will outlive Desperate Housewives. But then I'm not sure who DH is written for and why they're watching. What's the attractive fantasy? Or is it pure car wreck TV?

I know that 3/5 of Desperate Housewives viewers are women. And I know that I love the show. But I'm not sure how to state the attractive fantasy (though I'm even less sure what Boston Legal's is). The characters get involved in situations that are fairly relatable. It's fast-paced , a necessity given there are 4-5 stories an episode and 13 regulars. There's comedy and (melo)drama and mystery.
I like Boston Legal, but I'd be very surprised if it lasted longer than Desperate Housewives.

Boston Legal has outstanding writing in that its storylines reflect interesting "lawyerly" events, and at the same time have funny and fun characterizations. Because of this it will, of course, be dumped by the youthful and arrogant "Suits" who unfortunately govern what we view.
The same holds true for Desperate Housewives: tongue-in-cheek plots with laughs, grins and even a modicum of mystery. Once again the non-writer, CFO-fearing children in charge of programming will dump this program for yet another CSI or Reality show.
I think Boston Legal is one of the best written shows on TV. I really enjoy it, so I hope it doesn't go the way of the dodo.
As for Desperate Housewives, it's got an interesting mystery to it, but it isn't that great of a show. However, when it does have good moments, it's truly brilliant. Plus, it has some incredibly HOT women on it, which is enough for me. =)
I think a lot of women and married couples identify with the show. I'd say the the attractive fantasy is similar to that of daytime soap operas, but with better writing and production value.
Personally, I hope both shows make it, along with Lost.
