My favorite empathic metamorph, Famke Janssen, is back in
X-Men 3. (Which they'll probably call
X3 or something ... they can't call it
XXX after all.) But, says
Variety, because Jean Grey was killed off, she'll come back as "the Phoenix."
Correct me if I'm wrong, as my submissive friends say, but did we actually see her killed off? I could swear I noticed that they never actually showed her being drowned, and thinking well, she
did want to get out of the X-Men business...

There wasn't a body, but Jean also wasn't the type to let her friends think she's dead just because she wanted out of the X-men business.
The last movie ended with a faint image of the Phoenix appearing over the water. And the Dark Phoenix saga is one of the biggest X-Men stories ever done. So the basic concept of the next movie wasn't too difficult to guess.
Adding to what Jeff says, she's not dead as the film likewise ends with Prof. X smiling, glancing out his window and giving the audience that knowing look. And, if they are following the Comics then yes, it follows she's back as the Dark Phoenix, which, I concur, was one of my favourite storylines in the comic series.
Let's hope that's what the up-coming movie's about.
