CROSSOVERS

Interesting article on crossover eps on Lee Goldberg's blog, A Writer's Life. He's half of the writing team that wrote Successful TV Writing and shows like Diagnosis Murder, i.e. he's doing a mitzvah by sharing his insights with the rest of us when he could be writing produced TV.

I love crossover episodes. I don't love either Crossing Jordan or Las Vegas enough to watch them every week, but I made sure to tape them and watched them later. And I'm not the only one; both shows did better than usual in the ratings this past week.

I recently wrote a cross-over episode on one of the two shows I’m working on in SA. A character from one show, Biza, goes to stay at the B&B in the other show. Biza’s a lovable rogue who’s always getting into trouble. He stays at the B&B, creates havoc, redeems himself and leaves. Worked fine, was fun to write – but the network exec in all his wisdom gave a note in which he wanted a character from the B&B to speak to Biza about what it’s like to be a TV star. It took several emails and conversations to get the exec to grasp the concept that the Biza character is not a TV star, it’s the actor who portrays him who is. And this is the guy who’ll be in New York on the 22nd for the International Emmy awards for the one show – I almost pray we don’t win, I cringe at the speech he might make.
