Yet another in a series of early, truly terrible, bad versions of THE STAR WARS, by George Lucas. This one is a treatment.
No robots. No Force. But it actually got sillier before STAR WARS [IV] got better.
As someone pointed out, you can see where the sequels came from.

This treatment seems to follow Kurosawa's The Hidden Fortress most closely.
I read (scanned) that treatment and my head's immediately full of questions:
First and foremost, how in the fuck did Lucas ever get a film made?
Two, how did the guy who made the fine "American Graffiti" churn up this garbage?
(Answer: he didn't write the screenplay.)
What is with his predeliction for goofy "space words?"
My assumption about the failure of the prequels was: "Unimaginable success yields unimaginable laziness and self-indulgence." Turns out I was half right. Apparently the original "Star Wars" would have been just as bad had 20th Century Fox not reigned him in; "Empire" would have tanked had he not hired Kirshner and Kasdan. Lucas' first Star Wars would have been just as god awful had he been given free reign.
